![]() “A surprise ending that is gutsier and much less predictable than the rest of the series would lead one to expect.” - Los Angeles Times “The tragic conclusion, although shocking, is thematically consistent the bittersweet epilogue offers a poignant hope.” - Kirkus Reviews ![]() This final installment will capture and hold attention until the divisive final battle has been waged.” - Publishers Weekly Dangers, suspicion, and tension lurk around every corner, and the chemistry between Tris and Tobias remains heart-poundingly real. “Roth’s plotting is.intelligent and complex. ![]() “Roth shakes up her storytelling (and will do the same to some readers) in this highly anticipated, largely satisfying wrap-up to the Divergent trilogy.” - Publishers Weekly ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s the typical stereotypes of the experienced one, tech one, independent one and etc. The characters are very distinct and the further they’re evaluated, the more readers realise why they have been chosen amongst so many who signed up to be on the show. ![]() Yet the virtual reality comes in for the viewers watching at home and they can receive the same experience (sounds and sensations) that the contests go through. The worldbuilding itself had similar features to The Hunger Games as the story continued and that tension throughout when the contestants would face an obstacle felt really nostalgic! They’re recorded through cameras called Skyms, which follow their every move. I admit, I would’ve liked if we met the other contestants, but these few served justice. Plots like these are becoming very popular in the sci-fi genre, Finlay made a good choice to get right into the action! Written in third person, readers grasp each of the main contestants’ backgrounds from past interviews. If you’re a typical thriller fan like myself and love elements of sci-fi, romance, and intrigue, it’d take you no time to finish such a book. Finlay created a horrifically thrilling world that tests what’s real and what isn’t. Based on the blurb, readers would become hooked if they loved Warcross or Lost. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Raina Telgemeier has fully grasped this and weaved the graphic novel to create this very visceral experience for the reader.Īs an educationalist, Guts is a must for any KS2 classroom, if not year 2. The rhythm of the text accurately aligns with the erratic nature of emotions and anxiety. The voice of the characters is well established. The images serve to portray the complexities of these emotions perfectly. This book very sensitively covers all these things but is very much located in the voice of the young protagonist. Fortunately, we are in an age where anxiety and mental health are not seen as taboo and young people are being encouraged to explore and be open about this very prevalent aspect of being human.Īs a young person, I would have completely resonated with this book, and it would have made me feel better knowing I was not alone with those awful feelings in my tummy regarding friendship, home life, emotions, and aversions. Guts is a graphic novel, which explores the gripping effect anxiety can have on the stomach of any person but in particular a pubescent teenager. ![]() ![]() ![]() The praise heaped on Hurricane Season gives one the impression that it is a novel not to read so much as reckon with - or at the very least endure. Hurricane Season, by Fernanda Melchor, tr. That’s not bad for what amounts to a pragmatic Plan B. Now making its debut in English through New Directions, Hurricane Season is being further honored as a deeper-than-Deep South successor to William Faulkner. The result, published in Spanish in 2017, has been touted as a masterpiece of Mexican literary fiction. ![]() Instead, Melchor wrote a work of fiction that explored the “inner lives” of the perpetrators of a similar crime and depicted the grim conditions on the lower rungs of Mexican society. But instead of American flyover country, Melchor’s crime took place in a village teeming with cartel hideouts, where people were unlikely to talk and outsiders were likely to be noticed. Like Truman Capote before her, she’d read a matter-of-fact newspaper account of a grisly murder (in her case, a Veracruz woman killed and dumped in a canal by a man on whom she was casting love spells) and wanted to explore it further through narrative reporting. ![]() Fernanda Melchor had originally planned her second novel, Temporada de huracanes, to be nonfiction, something like In Cold Blood. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This he has done by accessing many surprising sources of evidence, including, for example, the British Geological Survey, aerial photography and by following on foot several of Robin Hood’s journeys described in the ballads. However, it is very easy to see what is going on and a little hard not to yell at the characters to figure it out. While the scenes at the farm were my favorite, I did like the lawyerly parts about the lawsuit. Enter high powered attorney Leigh, who must decide if she’s willing to help Nina who doesn’t have the money to hire her. When a kid falls off one of her ponies, Nina finds herself with a lawsuit that could force her to lose the farm. The main premise is about the farm’s owner Nina who runs programs at the farm for kids. Besides the great setting, this book had a good cast of character to both love and hate. A farm about an hour outside of Sydney Australia was a great place for a sweet romance. ![]() I always enjoy the settings of Blue’s books and this one was no exception. I almost felt like I was waiting for something to happen, but it just never did. ![]() ![]() The best way I can say is that it was a good story overall but there were a few parts that just didn’t click for me. I’m sitting here trying to wrack my brain on how I can explain why this didn’t completely work for me.
